On November 15, 2015, WeRateDogs was born. If you would've told me then that I'd be entertaining 750,000 people in less than a year I would've laughed in your face.
I joined Twitter in early 2014. I quickly found a strange, yet wonderful corner of the site known as "weird Twitter." This place was overflowing with incredible writers creating some of the funniest, most inspiring, and downright relatable af tweets you can imagine. All I wanted to do, from there on out, was give people the same feeling I had when I read a tweet from @jonnysun or @shutupmikeginn or @david8hughes or @iamspacegirl or so many other fantastic people I've interacted with over the years.
So I wrote jokes, or did my best I should say. There's only a handful I'm truly proud of, but this process of molding your words to convey your embarrassingly quirky thought or idea in a way that generates your intended response and doing so in less than 140 characters is an unmatched thrill for me. I can only compare it to when you're cutting wrapping paper and your scissors start to glide. Even the simplest captions on WeRateDogs probably took me like 10-15 minutes of absolute focus. After spending 2 years making jokes on Twitter, I realized that if your tweet contained a certain four-legged friend, it would get more popular than it probably should. I did whatever it took to include dogs in my tweets. Then, one day, at an Applebee's in Fuquay-Varina, NC, I asked my friend Morgan how his quesadilla burger was. "10/10" was his response. "What if I made an account that rates dogs?" was mine.
I used Twitter's poll feature and asked the followers on my personal account whether I should do this or not. To put it bluntly, they lost their shit. The poll ended up at 87% yes before I deleted it and made the account. If any of you who voted yes in that poll are reading this right now, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. So I made the account, announced it on my personal, and rated my first dog, here. I passed my personal account in followers in 5 days. An account that I had poured my time into for 2 years was surpassed by an account that rates dogs like it was nothing. Now WeRateDogs attempts to entertain hundreds of thousands of people every day.
Now, I skipped a ton of wild stuff that has happened to me since the inception of this account back in November, but I'd rather hang on to those stories to share in future blog posts, which I'm h*ckin thrilled to be doing. Check the first one out here.
You guys may be wondering how the hell I've done all this by myself. Well, I haven't. At least not for these past 3 months. I have two amazingly gifted individuals helping me out. They have made what you're reading possible on so many different levels and I'll be sure to introduce them in the near future.
I never expected to have such a massive platform. I never expected to have my quirky thoughts and ideas shared with potentially tens of millions of people. I never expected that these thoughts would be communicated in the captions of dog photos. I was just a bored freshman in college. But now we're here and I'm going to do everything I can to continue to make you all happier with the greatest doggos and puppers the world has to offer.
